An Unforgettable Mezcal Experience in Tumbisca

Tumbisca Awaits: Experience Mezcal Amidst Lush Forest Landscapes

On Friday morning, after a hearty and energizing breakfast, we prepared for an adventure that promised to be memorable. Our destination: a picturesque area full of trees and mountains, surrounded by lush nature. In our group, there were people of various ideologies, all united by a common goal: to help the environment and learn more about one of Mexico’s most emblematic traditions, mezcal.

After approximately an hour’s journey, we arrived at the town of Tumbisca, located in Morelia, Michoacán. This region, famous for its mezcal producers, welcomed us with its impressive natural landscape and cozy atmosphere. Our first destination was the mezcal distillery “El Despegón” of Don Martín. His distillery, though simple and artisanal, reflected the character and effort of the people who work in the area. There, we had the opportunity to taste some of their work and were amazed by the quality and flavor of the mezcal.

After an hour of flavors and charms, we headed to another distillery, this time that of Señor Mario Rocha. Upon arrival, we were greeted by about 11 mezcal producers from the area, who were eager to share their creations with us in a blind tasting. Each producer showed us their brands and told us a bit about the history and recipe that characterizes their mezcal. It was fascinating to listen to the stories and traditions surrounding mezcal production, and how each of them had found their own path in this craft.

By noon, we began the blind tasting, which included 11 different mezcal brands, each representing the best of the producers present. The flavors and aromas were so varied and rich that our palates delighted with every sip, appreciating the complexity and charm of each mezcal. Finally, the results of the tasting were announced: “El Despegón” mezcal was the winner for the second consecutive year, followed by “Peña del Agua” and “El Gallero” by Señor Joel in third place. The joy and pride of the producers were palpable, knowing that their area was recognized for producing excellent quality mezcal.

The afternoon continued with a delicious meal in the company of the producers. It was an opportunity to learn more about their customs and daily lives. The conversations were enriching, allowing us to appreciate even more the effort and dedication behind each bottle of mezcal.

As the afternoon waned, we set off back to Morelia, with hearts full of gratitude and minds filled with unforgettable memories. But the day was not yet over. At 8:00 p.m., we arrived at “Chango restaurant,” where we were expected for a mezcal cocktail tasting. The mezcals used were a traditional 40° Oaxacan espadín and a 45° Michoacan cupreata. The aim of this tasting was to explore how mezcal could be combined with different flavors in a drink and to gauge the acceptance of discerning palates.

Each cocktail was a work of art, combining ingredients that highlighted the unique flavors of the mezcal. It was a fascinating experience to discover how mezcal could adapt and pair with other foods, always maintaining its distinctive character and personality. This event not only demonstrated the versatility of mezcal but also reaffirmed its place in world culture and gastronomy.

Reflecting on the day, I realized how fortunate we were to have this experience. Getting to know the mezcal production process up close, interacting with the producers, and tasting their creations was a unique opportunity. Through each story and each sip, we were able to connect with the essence of this ancestral beverage and understand its cultural and economic significance.

The day not only left us with a greater appreciation for mezcal but also with a profound respect for the people who dedicate their lives to its production. Each producer we met was deeply committed to their craft, working hard to preserve traditions while striving to innovate and improve their products. This dedication and passion are palpable in every bottle of mezcal they produce.

As the day concluded, I couldn’t help but feel inspired by the experience. Mezcal is not just a beverage; it is a symbol of cultural identity and resilience, a bridge between the past and the present. This trip to Tumbisca reminded us of the importance of supporting and valuing local traditions, and how each of us can contribute to the preservation of these valuable customs.

Returning to the city, we carried with us more than just memories; we carried a new perspective and renewed appreciation for mezcal and the people who make it possible. It was an enriching experience that left us eager to continue exploring and learning more about this fascinating beverage and its impact on Mexican culture.

Thus ended our journey, with hearts full of gratitude and minds open to new possibilities. The adventure in Tumbisca showed us that mezcal is more than just a drink; it is an expression of life, tradition, and community. And we are grateful to have had the opportunity to be part of this wonderful experience.
